Fiber optic certifications: which ones matter

Certifications are how you show an employer what you know, and some employers require specific ones, especially for data center work. Here's what each one is, what it takes, and how often employers on FiberCrew ask for it.
OSHA 10 and OSHA 30
These are safety training cards, not certifications. OSHA's Outreach Training Program is voluntary. The 10-hour course gives workers an awareness of common job hazards, and the 30-hour course is meant for supervisors and workers with safety responsibility. Only OSHA-authorized trainers can teach it, and the trainer issues your card within 90 days. OSHA Outreach Training Program
Among the credentials on this page, OSHA 10 comes up most often in the postings on this board, and it's the quickest to get. Some employers provide it after you're hired.

FOA: CFOT and the splicing specialist credentials
The Fiber Optic Association's CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) is its core certification for fiber techs. There are no prerequisites. You can earn it by taking a course at an FOA-approved school, which usually gives the exam at the end, or directly if you have at least two years of documented field experience installing and testing fiber. The exam has 100 questions, and you need 70 correct to pass. FOA: CFOT certification
Once you have the CFOT, the specialist certifications build on it:
- CFOS/S, Splicing: outside plant splicing, cable prep, fusion splicing and OTDR testing. It's the one most relevant to splicers.
- CFOS/T, Testing: inspection, power, loss and OTDR testing.
- CFOS/O, Outside Plant Installation: aerial and underground installation, with splicing and OTDR.
- CFOS/H, FTTx: fiber-to-the-home networks.
FOA: specialist certifications
Cost: FOA lists its direct-certification exam at $170 as of October 1, 2026, and direct applicants also take a paid FOA online exam first. Certification renews every three years for $100. BICSI: for data center and structured cabling work
BICSI credentials come from the structured cabling world and show up most in data center postings.
- BICSI Installer 1 (INST1): an entry-level certificate. It needs no prior installation experience. BICSI Installer 1
- BICSI Installer 2, Optical Fiber (INSTF): the fiber installer credential. You qualify with 6 months of field experience plus INST1, 1 year of experience plus hands-on fiber training, or 2 years of fiber experience plus continuing education. - BICSI Technician (TECH): for techs who do advanced installation and diagnostic testing. It generally takes 1 to 3 years of experience with training, or holding Installer 2. BICSI Technician
If you want data center fiber jobs, BICSI is worth it.

Driving: CDL and DOT medical card
Neither is a fiber credential, but both come up. Work trucks often weigh enough that drivers need a DOT medical card: federal rules require one for vehicles rated 10,001 pounds or more in interstate commerce. FMCSA: medical certificate requirement A CDL is a plus for some construction roles, and a few employers train you for it.

Which should you get first?
- New to fiber: OSHA 10, then a hands-on course that ends with the CFOT. That shows you've handled a splicer before you apply for trainee jobs.
- Already splicing: experience matters more than paper. The CFOS/S or the direct CFOT route can help you move up a level or negotiate pay.
- Aiming for data centers: BICSI INST1, then Installer 2 Optical Fiber once you have the experience.
